program note:
Shadow play (1990) for contrabass is dedicated to the one of the most tragic events of the history of my country that was later named as Black January. In the midnight of January 20th, 1990 several divisions of the soviet army brutally invaded the capital city of Azerbaijan – Baku, killing and injuring thousand unarmed civilians. the emotional shock I went through wasn’t easy to describe by my words. The only way to represent my feelings was my music. I dedicated to these circumstances many others my compositions such as Gasida (1991) for organ, Dervish (1992) for tenor, bass and string quartet, Marsiya (1993) for string, wind, and SATB quartets, and piano. I express my special thanks and a personal dedication to a performer, and engraver of the Shadow Play, Javad Javadzade. He represents the young generation of talented Azerbaijani musicians, who were born in difficult and complicated 90th.
